The teaching of natural law within the old Helvetic confederation was first instituted in some of the Protestant cantons in the late seventeenth century, initially in German or Latin. The emergence of natural law as a separate academic discipline within the French speaking cantons of the Swiss romande followed shortly afterwards. This paper focuses on the exchange of ideas that occurred between two important thinkers within this newly emerging field of Francophone natural law debate: namely, Jean Barbeyrac in Lausanne and Louis Bourguet in Neuchâtel.
